So why is this happening?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block free-body\">\n<h2 class=\"content-item\">What is happening?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block free-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">Auckland Transport will increase speed limits on 1540 roads where limits were dropped since January 2020.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block free-body\">\n<h2 class=\"content-item\">Why are the speed limits increasing?<\/h2>\n<p>The changes stem back to the last election and are part of\u00a0<a id=\"link-063beb4992ad012fdfa399c74f598bb3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/politics\/133348845\/the-nationalled-government-coalition-agreements-at-a-glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the coalition agreement\u00a0<\/a>between National and Act.<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">The\u00a0<a id=\"link-fd513437b6d95a0373dfc8972ab4a845\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/nz-news\/350433126\/speed-limit-reductions-reversing-back-2019-transport-minister-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">government\u2019s rule change\u00a0<\/a>requires local roading authorities to reverse speed limit changes that were put in place in recent years on local roads because of a school in the area, or on main roads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<h2 class=\"content-item\">Where and when will speed limits change?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">Drivers will see the first speed limit rises on main roads, mostly in south-east Auckland, from Monday March 17.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<div id=\"piano-article-newsletter\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">There will be 34 speed limit changes on 26 main roads before March 30, most of those (18) will be on roads in the Howick Local Board area. Six are in the \u014ctara-Papatoetoe Local Board area.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container-slot article-container-block paywall restricted-body\">\n<div class=\"container-grid\">\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">Most of those changes will return speeds to 60kph, although Te Irirangi Drive will change to 80kph from 175m south of Ti Rakau Dr to 100m north of Belinda Ave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content-item\"><a id=\"link-c77f90c4804780963b546cc26b8d5093\" href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/9174fbf158714d76b582b8bc6fe95dcc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AT\u2019s map shows speed limits\u00a0<\/a>will increase on 1530 stretches of local roads from May to June. NZTA Waka Kotahi has indicated it will provide 51% of funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content-item\">Auckland Council\u2019s portion of costs is not budgeted in its regional land transport plan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container-slot article-container-block paywall restricted-body\">\n<div class=\"container-grid\">\n<div class=\"content-slot text-block paywall-init paywall restricted-body\">\n<p class=\"content-item\">According to AT, the electronic variable speed limit signs for schools cost approximately $12,500 each, and each section of road outside a school gate uses two signs.
