Photos Samantha Scown.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"pt-4 text-gray-500\">Alisha McLennan<\/p>\n<div id=\"ugc-html\" class=\"p-4 lg:pl-8 w-full lg:w-auto pb-10\">\n<p>Saturday\u2019s Hikoi for Health attracted an \u201camazing\u201d turnout, with up to 1000 people marching to protest the downgrading of obstetrics and gynaecology services at Whakat\u0101ne Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Chants of \u201cDon\u2019t ghost our coast\u201d and \u201cSafe birthing is our right\u201d rang out as placard-carrying protestors of all ages walked from Mitchell Park to Wharaurangi on The Strand.<\/p>\n<p>Hikoi for Health Coalition member and Whakat\u0101ne councillor N\u00e1ndor T\u00e1nczos estimates between 700 and 1000 people took part.<\/p>\n<p>In welcoming the crowds at Mitchell Park before the hikoi, he said: \u201cWe stand with our midwives, we stand with our doctors, we stand with our nurses, and we stand with our hospital support staff who everyone at our hospitals need to do their jobs properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>East Coast MP Dana Kirkpatrick congratulated the organisation team behind the hikoi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a mother I know the anxiety that comes when you are pregnant and know you are facing that birth \u2013 this situation has escalated that anxiety throughout our community, and it is just not acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur children are our taonga, our future and our everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a travesty that in a centralised health system we have ended up with more managers than ever, but they couldn\u2019t manage this issue in a timely and efficient way to ensure our mama and pepe were prioritised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She asked people to share their stories with her, and their solutions to these problems so she could take them to parliament.<\/p>\n<p>She said she and the Hikoi for Health Coalition would be pushing for regular public updates on recruitment and the local health services, and if these were not delivered, she would call for another public meeting with community support in a few months&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_579\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-579\" class=\"wp-image-579 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/exposures.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hikoi2.webp\" alt=\"COMMUNITY ANXIETY: East Coast MP Dana Kirkpatrick shares her experience as a mother and shows political support for the Hikoi for Health. \" width=\"700\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exposures.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/hikoi2.webp 700w, https:\/\/exposures.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/hikoi2-300x194.webp 300w, https:\/\/exposures.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/hikoi2-150x97.webp 150w, https:\/\/exposures.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/hikoi2-400x258.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>COMMUNITY ANXIETY: East Coast MP Dana Kirkpatrick shares her experience as a mother and shows political support for the Hikoi for Health. <\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Members of the crowd regularly called for \u201cmore funding\u201d throughout the march and speeches.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers at Wharaurangi included Labour Party mental health spokesperson and Tarei MP Ingrid Leary, Association of Salaried Medical Specialist union organiser Sarah Dalton, local midwife Brogen McBeth on behalf of local maternity caregivers and independent midwives, Green Party MP and health spokesperson Huhana Lyndon, midwife and manager of Kahu Taurima Holley Casey spoke on behalf of the Iwi Alliance and Te Kahu Taurima, and Whakat\u0101ne Act Local\u2019s Dave Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>Ms McBeth assured mothers local midwives would support them through any potential changes and staffing issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here for you down in the East Coast. Raise your voices to fight for this service but know that we have you in the background,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Councillor T\u00e1nczos said the hikoi was \u201cfantastic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community turned out in force to express their concern and anger. Our community will not let go of our right to a fully functional hospital. We know that our medical professionals are some of the best in the world, and we are fully behind them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast month our MP was saying this was simply a recruitment issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we know that was a smokescreen for dysfunctional management.
